  Your application must include:
  • a completed application form
  • a statement explaining what role the course would play in your personal and professional development and where you aim to locate yourself within the cultural and commercial industries
  • two references – one academic or from a relevant employer who knows your work
  • copies of your latest examination results or professional qualifications where applicable
  • a portfolio of previous work where applicable.

We recommend that you send your application by recorded mail. Due to the large number of applications, we are unable to send confirmation that your application has been received. Although we treat all work with the greatest care and respect, the college cannot accept any responsibility for loss or damage of any of the work you submit.

Application deadline
Applications are welcome throughout the year, however places are limited and you’re advised to apply before June for the October start.

International students
If you’re from outside the European Union, please contact the Central Saint Martins International Office. Our International Office deals specifically with the needs of students from overseas. They will be able to assist and advise you on applying to the course, accommodation, visa requirements and much more.

English language requirements
All classes are conducted in English, so you will be required to have a fluent understanding of the language. If English is not your first language you will be asked to provide evidence of your English language ability.

The minimum scores for entry on to a postgraduate course are as follows:
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 7.0
  • TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) – hand written test: 600; computer based test: 250.

We provide free tuition in English for international students and regular workshops in the language of art and design. We also offer a number of short courses that enable students from overseas to improve their portfolios and English skills before applying to their chosen course.

Interviews
Interviews commence in February. Prior to your interview, we will review your application and, if applicable, your portfolio. Your portfolio will be for returned to you at the end of your interview. You will be informed of the result by post.

Portfolio advice
Your portfolio should demonstrate your practical and conceptual skills and your working processes. Portfolios are restricted to A3 size. The content of your portfolio will depend on your field of expertise, as follows:

Designers should include:
  • 20 slides of visual work
  • cross platform CDRoms or DVDs of moving image work if appropriate
  • developmental research material
  • samples of written work.
Curators and museum studies graduates should include:
  • a detailed professional CV with project descriptions
  • documentation of work where possible.
Architects should include
  • your degree project
  • two other projects that include concept drawings and process work that demonstrate your own concerns
  • drawings, designs, visualisations and photographs of models appropriate to your experience and background.
Writers and humanities graduates should include:
  • a publications list
  • a CV detailing recent projects, eg screen writing, script writing, art directing or articles from journals or newspapers, short stories, novels
  • details of membership to professional organisations, eg The Writers Guild or NUJ
  • at least three samples of work.
