The Purple Patch Experience
Commuters experience greater stress than riot policemen or fighter pilots going into battle. The stress and monotony of travel causes people to forget large parts of their journey. The time we spend travelling becomes ‘dead’ time.
Using the journey from Richmond to Waterloo as a case study, this project aims to combat commuting blues, relieve stress and dispel commuting amnesia by using a series of interventions to encourage fun and interaction.
Running every Monday for four weeks, commuters solve clues scattered along the route in the morning. Some clues are obvious, boards on station platforms, articles in the Metro newspaper; but others are less so, information on food packaging, actors at stations planting information, spreading clues by word of mouth. Commuters experience unique events; from chatting over coffee in a newly created chill out zone to sharing a good laugh at an impromptu comedy show. Sick of exercising in the gym? Try a new hobby, check out Rockhoppers Climbing Club in week 3. Looking for love? Wait until week 4 and dress to impress, it could be your lucky night…..
