Crossing that Bridge: a walking exhibition

Bridges resemble a certain kind of psychological state. They are both joining and deviding. Through the act of walking these connections are made and re-made, physically and conceptually over time and through space.

Using the Millennium Bridge as a symbol this project is a sound and light installation that embodies the psychology of transitory space.

A range of sound is captured from the bridge, the river and its environment, above and under water, using a conventional microphone, a hydrophone and a contact microphone.

The sounds are abstracted and broadcast so the sound sequence unfolds beside you and above you as you cross the bridge. At night the flow of people on the bridge is projected in real time as a moving ‘blade of light’ across the surface of the Thames.
