The Corridor: A Mirrored Skywalk Concept for Oxford Street, London 2012 Aim: The design aims to alleviate current and impending future pedestrian congestion levels, simultaneously giving those both on the street and above in buildings and skywalk, a renewed aesthetic appreciation for this overly crowed urban space. It has the potential to open up the street for increased public transport movement, as well as connecting the road’s different industries on an additional level. Rationale: By utilising the properties of a hallway mirror, this skywalk opens up the space, creating more physical as well as visual space. It blends seamlessly into the existing urban fabric, replicating and erasing, creating visual illusions that distort but also inform of what the naked eye on Oxford Street would not be able to see, such as a different view of the skyline from both skywalk and the ground. The Corridor connects and provides easier access for pedestrians to Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Circus, and Bond Street Tube Stations, major businesses such as Selfridges, Debenhams, John Lewis, Nike Town, HMV, and Waterstones among others. |
