The Brunswick Centre is going through the most exciting transition since opening in 1972. For many years the fabric of the centre has been in decline and is seen by many people in the surrounding community as 'ugly' and foreboding. However, to the many residents who live here it is their home and for some it has been since it opened; for them the centre has a strong sense of community and identity.

The Brunswick Centre

Aims:The proposal is to cover the entire centre in a light fabric for a two-week period running up to the opening in May 2006. Cut into the fabric will be patterns and images that reflect the building and moments of the lives of the people who live there, to create a visible manifestation of the center's memories and lives, to remember (inside) and at the same time to share the image of home with the non-residents (outside).

Rationale: On a practical level, the cover will provide a screen for the final preparations and a backdrop for the opening celebrations. It tells the building's stories and simultaneously appears as the "blank canvas" of the new Brunswick: actively joining past and future.
