In futurecasting airport retail for 2026 we identified a potential need for retail on the move and designed an experience defined by this concept. Our given drivers suggested a future of higher passenger numbers and anonymous travel, the breakdown of national borders eliminating the need for security checks and allowing more fluidity through airports. This is not intended to be a luxury experience and our retail choices prioritise basic needs whilst providing a range of choice from upscale to budget.
All retailers sell directly to travellers in the airport space and to be truly mobile either provide their goods and services on the spot or deliver to the customer through an organised network dispersed along the linear journey from airport entrance to plane. We chose to employ live sales agents rather than use mechanised interfaces due to the potential of humans to establish relationships via repeat trade and for their ability to deliver a sales pitch and intuitively react to customers by reading body language.
