Bloomberg is a well-known worldwide financial media service company. It has created a revolutionary interactive financial information network that has become an integral way of understanding global financial markets.

Scarlet Projects organised a competition on behalf of Bloomberg’s London HQ (in Finsbury Square) to create a soft sitting area for eight to 10 people. MA students from Industrial Design and Creative Practice for Narrative Environments were invited to work together to submit entries.

The brief was to create an installation and design for tables and chairs, to be placed by the reception area. Bloomberg employees and visitors would use the space as a relaxing and waiting area. Because the space is already media-rich, students were asked not to use any technology or sound in the installation.

Period of the installation: 6 June to 6 September, 2004

  BloomberQ

Rational:
A fun and relaxing environment associated with leisure that would facilitate informal communication.

Proposal:
A sitting area revolving around the idea of barbeque culture.Seasonal changes are reflected by different locations for spring, a BBQ patio; for summer, a beach.

Bloomberger

Rationale: Bloomberg’s name flagging up the irony that the seating area sits alongside the food hall.

Proposal: An seating system inspired by fast food - a theatre of burgers, buns, serviettes and straws, where magnified cups and ketchup sachets serve as coffee tables and cushions.
