| The project Bobby Smith is a large bubblegum machine that acts as a ‘story dispenser’ offering alternative stories of public spaces. It is a mobile and interactive intervention that was developed as part of the London Architecture Biennale, (LAB) Student Festival 2006. |
|
Rationale Bobby Smith is named after Smithfield Market. The design team ran workshops with local children from Prior Weston Primary School to develop a fresh perspective on the location. The children used drawing, collage, comics, flipbooks and plasticine to invent and tell their stories about the history and use of the space. The stories in words and pictures were dispensed with balloons in plastic bubbles. Passers by were invited to participate by writing or drawing their own message on the helium filled balloons that were released to float above the neighbourhood the final day. The project won the London Architecture Biennale Student Award for The Most Innovative Children’s Workshops. |
