What it is

For the second cycle of the 'Keeping in Touch' Project, an 18m long silver rub-off surface spreads on the Royal Festival Hall hoardings. As people scratch parts of it, they uncover a new dimension to their environment – musical and visual collages consisting of love messages, spoken and written, hidden through a secret world inspired by Mark-Anthony Turnage latest piece, Hidden Love Song.

This project aims to create an awareness to the ongoing Education Project, a collaboration between the Royal Festival Hall Education Team, pupils of Lambeth Schools, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and their resident composer, Mark-Anthony Turnage. All contributed to giving the passer-by the opportunity to explore a fantasy Loveland. A moment of discovery and personal engagement, establishing a dialogue between Turnage's approach, the education program's involvement and the commuters.

Notes on Turnage's approach to composing:
'fragment, distort, scrabbing out layers and covering over traces'.

Turnage's fusion and urban approach are rendered through the constant remixing of three main components: discontinuous scratching noises, various extracts of the piece, children voices speaking of their impressions on the 'Hidden Love Song' theme. These three elements come together as a musical collage, allowing commuters to create their own piece as they play with the installation.
