The London Borough of Southwark was once home to such household names as Courage Beer, Jacobs Cream Crackers, Peak Frean biscuits and Sarsens Vinegar. It was the centre for large-scale industries associated with shipbuilding and transport. And you’d have found Europe’s largest manufacturer of leather goods. But not today.

These businesses are now virtually all gone, either bankrupt or subsumed into international conglomerates. Fortunately, parts of Southwark have been ‘rescued’ by the introduction of new industries and commerce and the opening of Tate Modern at Bankside.

This project commemorates these lost industries through a website, with maps that show locations of key factories and workshops. The maps also act as a guide to interactive sound installations, which evoke the lives and experiences of 19th century Southwark.

Two the buildings at the centre of the project are the former Biscuit Factory and Bermondsey Wire Works. The project is in progress.
